Building & Grounds

In June of 2022, Christ the King purchased our property at 1801 N. Quaker Lane and set up a Building and Grounds Committee (B&G Committee) to address needed repairs and improvements in the short term, to sponsor volunteer “Work Days,” and to begin the process of planning for our property in the long term.

In April 2023, Christ the King engaged Kerns Group Architects in Falls Church to help us design a Master Plan, either to expand our building or to modify our building within its footprint.  Consequently, the B&G Committee going forward will focus on long-term planning with the architects and will no longer oversee routine repairs and improvements to the church property, which will now be addressed by staff.  All work will continue to be listed here on the Christ the King website and kept current in information available to the congregation in the foyer.

The B&G Committee continues to be guided by the words of Psalm 84—“How lovely is thy dwelling place, O LORD of hosts!”—to ensure that in our long-term planning, we strive to beautify and improve both the building and the grounds to glorify God and to support our ministry and work for His purposes.

Repair & Improvement

The B&G Committee at Christ the King has worked to address a variety of immediate property issues. As of October 1, 2023, the Committee completed the following repairs and improvements:

  • Five parish work days, involving roughly 60 members of the church, beautifying the church grounds and modifying, repairing, and cleaning the interior

  • Replacement of a non-functioning HVAC unit which serves our children’s classrooms and nursery

  • Emergency repairs to the roof

  • Removal of two dead trees from the back of the property

  • Replacement of multiple broken windows in the classrooms

  • Re-keying of all locks

  • Relocation of church offices to free space for growth in children’s ministry and renovation of Room A

  • Electrical repairs and addition of outlets to new church offices

  • Repaving and re-striping of parking lot

  • Upgrade of fire prevention system to bring building into compliance with city regulations

  • Completion of first meetings for congregational input into the long-term design process

  • Plumbing repairs to comply with Virginia Commonwealth regulations

  • Implementation of a comprehensive recycling policy

  • Engagement of Kerns Group Architects for the development of a long term, phased-schedule Master Plan

  • Repainting of interior doors and walls and refreshment of decor and window treatments in the classrooms

  • Replacement of asphalt roof and repairs and repainting of our gutters

Work Days & Groundskeeping Ministry

The B&G Committee sponsors Work Days throughout the year to maintain our grounds, make small improvements, and prepare for significant celebrations in the Church Calendar. In furtherance of these goals, the Committee has also launched a Groundskeeping Ministry to beautify and maintain the church grounds until we are able to implement a long-term landscape design.

Long Term Planning

The B&G Committee seeks the input of all members of Christ the King in planning for the future of our indoor and outdoor spaces. In furtherance of this goal, the Committee held two parish-wide sessions in August 2022—each led by a member of the B&G Committee with expertise in design—to elicit members’ thoughts, ideas, and desires for the church property. These sessions generated productive discussion among the congregation.

In April of this year, the Committee engaged Kerns Group Architects in Falls Church to help Christ the King design a Master Plan for purposes of long-term planning of future renovations, enhancements, and possible expansion outside of the building footprint. This Master Plan process incorporates the work of Kirk Bereuter, a member of the B&G Committee and a licensed landscape architect, who is giving his time and expertise to develop concept designs for our outdoor spaces. The overall goals for the Master Plan are as follows:

  • Create new additions that respect the existing mid-century modern church style.

  • Determine the capacity of the site with the appropriate balance among buildings, parking, and outdoor spaces.

  • Foster a strong sense of welcoming, hospitality, and connections.

  • Integrate landscape with building.  Create a strong connection between interior and exterior spaces.

  • Integrate accessibility throughout.

The Master Plan process is now complete and we invite everyone to hear a presentation of Kerns’ concept design ideas, as well as Kirk Bereuter’s outdoor concept designs, on Sunday, November 19.

84:1 Building Fund (formerly 127:1)

Your continued contributions to the 84:1 Building Fund (formerly the 127:1 Fund) ensure that Christ the King can make necessary repairs, plans, and renovations in the future. Especially now that we are finalizing a long-term Master Plan with Kerns Group—and the significant costs to us of roof replacement and parking lot repaving—your generosity is more crucial than ever. We thank you for your prayerful consideration of how you will continue to support our efforts to make our Sanctuary and grounds a “lovely dwelling place.”
