Q5: What else did God create?
ANSWER: God created all things by his powerful Word, and all his creation was very good; everything flourished under his loving rule.
The magisterial prologue of John's Gospel announces that "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him was not any thing made that was made." In this terse statement John not only affirms Christ's equality with the Father, but also reveals His role in the authorship of Creation. From John we learn that all that exists and ever has existed derives its being, its substance and its sustenance directly from our Lord Jesus Christ.
In addition, Scripture tells us that this Creation was "very good." Recognize that this declaration poses a direct challenge to much of traditional (and for that matter, modern) religion in that it rejects any form of religious dualism which views the body as somehow lower, or separate from, the mind or soul. In other words, the affirmation that God's creation was "very good" rejects any attempt to cleave mind from body, matter from spirit.
It is all too common for us to reflexively identify the spiritual realm with goodness and light and the physical realm with evil and shadow. Musicians imagine our bodies as "soul cages," filmmakers denigrate our bodies as "crude matter," even ancient philosophers sought escape from the prison of the body. Yet the biblical vision of Creation is holistic, not dualistic. You are not neatly divisible into a body and a soul, and your salvation does not involve spiritual rescue from the evils of the physical world. The physical world and physical being matters to God--after all, He created it, and it belongs to Him, just as He created you and you belong to Him! Christ did not free us from our bodies, rather He redeemed us in our bodies with His body. Your body is not mere matter; it is a temple of the Holy Spirit.
And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.
I Corinthians 6:19-20
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
